Here is some basic information on what the RMA is all about:
The RMA :
- is based on the idea of a sustainable management of resources
- encourages us to make decisions about our environment through Public Notification and consultative processes
- creates the Rules in the District Plan that control activities, including subdivision, in the particular District Council administered area.
- provides for resource consent to be issued for specific activities by Council's under a District Plan - a subdivision consent is just one type of resource consent.
- has five classes of resource consents - permitted activity, controlled activity, discretionary activity, non-complying activity and prohibited activities
- allows Council's to issues resource consents with a list of conditions to be fulfilled.
There are a range of offences and penalties under the RMA that can be used for people who don't behave in an environmentally responsible way, including:
- instant infringement notices
- excessive noise directions
- abatement notices
- enforcement orders
- prosecutions.
